What Is an Internet Speed Test?

An internet speed test measures your connection's download speed, upload speed, and ping by transferring test data and timing how long it takes. This gives you a practical estimate of your current internet performance directly from your browser.

How It Works

The test downloads and uploads data using multiple parallel streams to saturate your connection and measure true throughput. Ping is measured by timing small requests to estimate round-trip time. Multiple samples are taken for accuracy.

Understanding Results

  • Download (Mbps): How fast data can be received. 25+ Mbps is good for streaming; 100+ Mbps is ideal for multiple users.
  • Upload (Mbps): How fast data can be sent. 5+ Mbps is good for video calls; 20+ Mbps is ideal for uploading large files.
  • Ping (ms): The round-trip delay for data. Lower is better; under 20 ms is excellent, under 50 ms is good for most uses.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my measured speed lower than my plan?

Many factors affect measured speed: Wi-Fi interference, network congestion, distance from the router, device capabilities, and the test server's location. Wired connections generally provide more consistent results than Wi-Fi.

How accurate is a browser-based speed test?

Browser-based tests provide a reasonable estimate but may be slightly lower than native application tests due to browser overhead. For the most accurate results, close other tabs and applications during the test and use a wired connection.
